Life is…Too Short

Maybe life isn't about avoiding the bruises. Maybe it's about collecting the scars to prove we showed up for it.I turned 47 on Sunday, but I didn’t really feel any older during the advanced class at LBJJC last night, even after not training for a week (because of my sore knee), and despite my drilling partner being thirty years younger than me. I actually like working with the teenager because he’s close to my size, but I’m a little jealous of how quickly he seems to absorb the techniques, it’s like he’s SpongeBoy GiPants! We were practicing alternate omoplata finishes during class, and he’s so flexible that it was difficult to tap him even in drilling, but then when we were rolling, I was able to use my own flexibility to successfully defend and escape his omoplata attempts (but not all of his armbars).

Rolling was tough yesterday, because the rounds were ten minutes long, but life is too short to spend time stressing about my performance instead of just enjoying training, so I loved every miserable bit of it. I was especially glad that my bad knee didn’t give me any trouble, and I was grateful that I’m not one of the people who is competing this weekend, because they had to do push-ups, squats, and burpees between every round. I’m thinking that my armbar defense probably needs some work, but on the positive side, no one choked me last night (and not for lack of trying).

One of the guys who got an armbar on me said “I’m definitely the nail tonight” after he was submitted by The Teenager, so I wondered if he was the nail, and GiPants was the hammer, then what did that make me, since I tapped to both of them? I guess on days like that, I’m the board that the nail goes into (which could explain all of the bruises and scars I’ve accumulated through the years ;), but one of the best things about Jiu-Jitsu is that even when I’m the board, it’s never boring!
